How Sarah J. Maas Revived My Reading & I Started Watching Sherlock! 14

Hello all! I have decided that I would like to start up a mid week connection post and just catch up on all that has been happening, especially since I took a bit of time to myself. Hope you all enjoy even tho it isn’t tea driven.  But no worries, lots of good tea love is heading your way later in the week!

What Have I Been Reading. . . .

Since joining the amazing FB group, Geek Girl Bloggers, I have discovered a few new authors off of their wonderful recommendations. I can’t say an author has created such a drive to read in me in a while. And this is the book that started it all. . . .

If you aren’t familiar with Sarah J Maas, she has written the incredibly popular series, Throne of Glass-a YA book series. A Court of Thorns and Roses is her the story of Feyre, a young lady who is ripped from her world and thrown into a magical land that she doesn’t completely understand.

I don’t want to give too much away, but let’s just say, this story keeps your attention and draws out so much emotion. At least it did for me. I found myself crying and laughing out loud while I read the book. Sadness, happiness, a love story, action, suspenseful moments, you have them all in the pages of this book.

The story itself keeps you engaged and I found myself doing that “Just one more chapter, then I’ll go to bed” routine.  I’ve already dived into the second book and finished it within a day or two.  I think I actually liked the second story more.  There was a lot deeper and more complex character development in the second book and the story lines were even richer with content.  I can’t believe I have to wait until next year for the third book. (AGH!!!)

If you have read the Throne of Glass series,  I urge you to read this series. I did just finish up the first Throne of Glass book and found myself craving a bit more.  I’ll be starting the second book soon hoping the second one catches my attention like the A Court of Thorns and Roses series did.

If anybody has any other recommendations for similar books, let me know.  I’ve just recently dipped my toe into this genre and so far am loving what I’m finding.  I’ve gone back to reading a couple books a week and that has proven to be an amazing stress reliever as of late.

What Have I Been Watching. . . .

My reading may suffer a bit over the next week or so because the family decided to start watching. . .

I know! I know! I’m late to the game with this one, but seriously. . I didn’t think a show could revile for my affection as much as Doctor Who. . but this one is up there. Each episode is better than the last.  Hilarious, funny, witty, and simply brilliant. The show has us as a family enjoying time together again.

And if you haven’t watched Stranger Things. . .do it now! The show is such a throw back to my childhood with all of the different references to movies like Stand By Me and Goonies. The horror undertones are right inline with the horror movies that started my obsession with the genre moons ago.  With classic Evil Dead references and the “It” symbolic nature, this show has really stirred up emotions in people.   Netflix continues to impress with their original content and this one might just be my favorite one.  Can’t wait to see what Season 2 has in store for us.

~Until Next Time~

I had a similar experience with ACoTR, I just didn’t have the drive to finish a book for fun after doing so much academic reading but picked up ACoTR and A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab and both just drew me in, in a way a book hadn’t in a long time. I did have a whole bunch of problems with ACoTR but loved the writing style and imagery so I kept reading and it was definitely worth it, especially Book two! The second book is superior in my opinion.
I never could get into a Throne of Glass though, it may be one of those books I have to give a second chance to at some point.

I’m really hoping that the Throne of Glass series picks up. I had so much love for her other books that I was thinking this will be an instant love. Towards the end, I started getting those warm feels over the characters so I’m thinking this is a book that you learn to love.

The Throne of Glass series is a bit slower to get to the true action than ACOTAR, but it’s worth it. The third book is spectacular, and you’re going to meet so many awesome characters as you continue reading. The fifth book comes out next month, and I’m super excited. (I also get to moderate a book event with Sarah, which is also exciting and a little terrifying.)

If you like her writing, definitely check out Leigh Bardugo’s books (The Grisha Trilogy and the Six of Crows duology), Laini Taylor’s Daughter of Smoke and Bone series, and Maggie Stiefvater’s The Raven Cycle. 🙂

Holy cow! That is awesome. I’m so jealous! You get to moderate a book event with her?!? Very cool. (Ok, I’ll stop geeking out now.)

Thanks for the other recommendations. I’m adding them to my list. After reading ACOTAR, any book you recommend, I’m all over it!

I didn’t realize you hadn’t seen Sherlock yet! I’m so glad you’re enjoying it; I agree, it’s so great! And Stranger Things was just fantastic. I’ve heard a ton about ACOTAR and it’s on my TBR list, so I definitely want to check it out sometime.

I know! Shame on me for never watching Sherlock, but we wanted to finish off the other shows we were watching before we started watching it. Now we can’t stop. Even bought the Pops to go along with the series (soon to be seen on the blog-ha!).

Check out ACOTAR. I have a feeling you’ll love it!

Hey but better late than never right? I love Sherlock! I remember when I sat down and watched it with the hubby he was like “What there are only 3 episodes?” Then we realized how long there were and we were like oh okay. Okay.

I’ve heard nothing but good things about The Glass Throne series I’ve really gotta check it out!

I’m a huge fan of Sarah J. Maas and her stuff. I’ve read both the Court books (Book 2 is actually even better!) and I’m trying to get my hands on all the Throne of Glass books. Book 2 in that series will break your freaking heart.
